Fighting Back - The Immune System Structure and Function


In this lesson 2 of 4, students will explore the immune system's structures and functions.


In this lesson 2 of 4, it focuses on how the human immune system fights back against foreign pathogens trying to enter the body. Students will complete engaging activities that will require them to use prior knowledge, small group collaboration and research.  Students will take an in depth look into the immune system, its components, types of immunity and the body's response to pathogens. This lesson provides necessary knowledge for the completion of the culminating project in lesson 4.

By the end of this lesson, students should have the knowledge to answer the following essential questions.

Essential Questions:

  • How does the immune system work to protect us from disease and infection?
  • How do vaccines protect the community?

This lesson may be done in one class period, but may extend to two class periods depending on class discussion and level of student knowledge.
