Finding Area and Perimeter using the AutoCAD program

Students will draw a simple cabinet using the AutoCAD program and all commands that apply. Students will also learn to use an AutoCAD command called AREA to calculate for Area and Perimeter. Additional understanding will be to know the difference between area and perimeter using geometric concepts, relationship and understand how they are connected to other mathematical topics and school subjects. Two worksheets with performance base problems will be provided.

Because of the nature of this lesson that requires students to know basic commands and general knowledge of drafting, this lesson was given during the mid-year of school. Teacher will decide based on knowledge of his or her students before giving this lesson.

Related Instructional Objectives (SWBAT...)

  • Students will watch a video that has relevance to architecture design and how AREA and PERIMETER is used in the real world. Because the workplace requires accurate measurements, students will understand how mistakes can cost time and money.
  • Using the AutoCAD program students will make correct input that dictates the outcome and do the proper editing to create the cabinet drawing (lesson 2) according the worksheet dimensions.
  • Student must use the proper layers according to the standards followed by the industry or classroom standards. This includes line types, weights and color as specified by the teacher.
  • In lesson 1- students will use a tape measure and a calculator to measure items specified by the teacher to figure for AREA and PERIMETER. Items measured where based on furniture in my classroom. Teacher can take this lesson outdoors and still have the same learning results.
  • In Lesson 2- students will draw a simple cabinet and answer question from worksheet 2.
