Healthy We = Healthy Me: An Intro to the Public Health System

by

This lesson is the first in a series of four lesson plans which serves as an introduction to the fundamental functions of the public health system. The relationship between the public health system and individual health will also be evaluated through the lens of public health best practices and procedures.

Introduction

The public health system is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as, "all public, private, and voluntary entities that contribute to the delivery of essential public health services within a jurisdiction". Public health system efforts are concentrated on the prevention of illness and disease and the promotion of well-being through research, education, and policy development.

This lesson is intended to introduce students to fundamental concepts in Public Health. Students will explore the connection between the 10 Essential Public Health Services and individual well-being through participation in a class lecture and the evaluation of non-fictional literature. Best practices in the development of public health programs will be discussed in preparation for the consecutive lessons in this unit of instruction.
