Lesson 1: Understanding Gears

Introduction

Students will need to learn about the many types of gears and how they are used in a gearbox. The material that gears are made from and how to select gears of the correct material is a critical skill of the designer. Gears that are made from the wrong material for the application can fail or bind under load. The students need to review a seven step design process prior to starting the lesson on gears. This review will help keep the project on track for completion. Understanding gear ratios and how to select the correct ratio for the application is the most important student objective of this lesson.
