Lesson 4: How to Draw Lines and Arcs Accurately in CAD (How to Avoid the Leaning Tower of Pisa)

This will be the students' first experience drawing lines and circles to exact length, using keyboard entry for line length, relative coordinates to the last point, and 2 simple snap modes (endpoint and center).

First they will see a demonstration of the uses of keyboard entry to control line length, a short introduction to relative coordinates, and snap modes. Then the students will experiment with these methods with teacher directed instructions. After practice, the students will create a new drawing and draw the assignment "Notched Plate" in CAD (see materials list).

Objectives and Goals:

Related Instructional Objectives (SWBAT...)

  • Students will be able to open a new file.
  • Students will be able to start a line and control the exact length with keyboard entry of numbers (simple whole and decimal numbers, no fractions or architectural units) .
  • Students will be able to use the "relative coordinate system" to enter placement of lines relative to the last point chosen.
  • Students will be able to use the "Snap Mode" options of "endpoint" and "center" and learn how to turn those snap modes on and off.
  • Students will be able to place circles and control their size with Radius and Diameter input.
  • Students will be able to print a simple drawing to full scale on letter-sized paper.
