Lesson 4: Model Glider Building Activity

Introduction

In this 4 or 5 day activity lesson, students will build a model of a glider using fanfold insulation, foam core, or balsa wood. This will be a focused period of time to build the glider and put into practice the fundamentals of aviation the students have learned in the previous lessons. I have found that this is usually enough time to complete the glider. It is possible that it could take an additional 50 minute period.

  • Day 1- show the "hook" video and Demo part 1 of glider construction (either show the video or teacher Demo) with model building for the remainder of the period.
  • Day 2 - Show Demo part 2 video (or teacher Demo) with the rest of the period for model building.
  • Day 3 - Show Demo video part 3 (or teacher demo) with the rest of the period for model building.
  • Day 4 (and possibly day 5) - model building and test flights to set the rudder, ailerons, elevators, etc. to control the flight of the glider.
