Lesson 2 of 4 will focus on load transfer mechanisms and the various types of loads that act on a building structure such as vertical loads, lateral loads, and load resisting systems.

In this second lesson of four, students will study load transfer mechanisms and the various types of loads that act on a building structure such as vertical loads, lateral loads, and load resisting systems. This is important for the following two reasons:

  1. In order to design a structural sound building you must be able to identify the forces acting on a building in order to counter act them.
  2. Depending on the loads and which are acting with the greatest impact will determine what type of building system you will integrate and this plays a he factor in the overall appearance and form of a building.  

Students will then have to pass a exercise demonstrating knowledge of post and beam in a simple structure.  

Students will also learn and see visual diagrams of the following basic structural principles:

  • Vertical Loads
    • Live Load
    • Dead Load
  • Load Transfer within a building
  • Lateral (Horizontal) Loads
    • Seismic
    • Wind
  • Shear Walls
  • Braced Walls
