Raising Awareness - Public Education on Disease Transmission

This lesson 4 of 4, the culminating project will focus on public education of disease transmission or the importance of immunizations.

Introduction

In this lesson, 4 of 4, students will utilize prior knowledge from the previous lessons to complete the culminating project and raise awareness through public education. The focus of this lesson will be creating a children's storybook for educating the public on disease transmission, disease prevention, germs, or the importance of immunizations. The storybooks created can be shared with local pre-schools, elementary schools or doctors' offices.

This lesson may be done in two periods, but may extend to multiple class periods depending on level of student knowledge. You may also assign some of the work as out of class assignments.

Children’s Book- students will write and illustrate a children’s book (pre-K- 2nd grade level) on a chosen topic.

Materials:

  • Story board templates
  • Lined paper
  • Pencils
  • Computers
  • White printer paper
  • Storyboard That website (free to educators)
  • My Storybook website (free to educators)
  • Project check-in handout
  • Storybook Rubric

Teachers Notes:

  • Prep before class: 
  • Teacher should look into the storybook creating websites, to see the different areas. (characters, backgrounds, etc.) Tutorials will be in the illustration activity.
    • Photocopy story board templates 
    • Have video ready 
    • Group assignments written on index card
    • Group assignments could be chosen by number.
    • Photocopy enough numbers to have 4 students to a group.
    • Example: if you have 20 students, you will need 4- papers with #1, 4- papers with # 2, 4- papers with #3, 4- papers with # 4, 4- papers with # 5.
    • Students will then select a paper from a basket or bowl.
    • Then all the students will the same number will be in a group.
    • Groups will then move together and choose a topic for their project.

  • Disease prevention
  • The importance of immunizations

Children’s Book- groups will write and illustrate a children’s book (pre-K- 2nd grade level) on a chosen topic.
