Technical Writing, Part 2 of 4 (Materials List & Instructions)

by

Building upon the technical writing foundation established in the first lesson, this lesson is devoted to assembling materials and writing instructions.

Lesson #2 includes activities and instruction on properly assembling a materials list, the importance of properly sequenced steps, a well-written set of instructions, and the drafting of a set of instructions for the assembly of a balsa wood glider.

Introduction

These two class periods focus on writing instructions and assembling materials for the construction of the balsa wood glider. A PowerPoint presentation/lecture teaches the fundamental building blocks of instructions and leads to a template for each group to begin writing their own set instructions for the assembly of the glider. (Note: A comprehensive list with all the requisite materials and approximate costs is provided, so teachers can plan.)

Students cut out paper templates for the requisite parts of the glide, trace onto airplane grade balsa wood, and cut out the pieces leading to the assembly in Lesson #3.
