Wherever We Go, There They Are! All About Infectious Diseases

In this lesson 3 of 4 students will gain an understanding of infectious diseases, disease transmission and infection control.

Introduction

This lesson, 3 of 4, focuses on disease transmission, types of pathogens and infection control. Students will be able to draw on prior knowledge to complete this lesson.  Students will be able to identify various pathogens and the disease they cause. Students will explore how diseases are transmitted and give some methods for disease prevention. This lesson provides necessary knowledge for the completion of the culminating project in lesson 4.

By the end of this lesson students will be able to answer the essential questions.

Essential Questions:

  • How are diseases transmitted?
  • What are some ways to prevent the spread of disease?

This lesson may be done in two class period, but may extend to three class periods depending on class discussion and level of student knowledge.

  • Computers or laptops
  • Internet access
  • Communicable and non-communicable disease cards
  • Balloon 
  • Wire
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Bolts
  • Air dough or play doh
  • Q-tips
  • Styrofoam balls
  • Yarn
  • Construction paper
  • Butcher paper or poster boards
  • Markers, paints, etc.
  • Handout on Disease-Causing Scenarios included with lesson
