Working with Concrete- The Slump Test

Introduction

In this lesson students will work with concrete. Students will be learning the effects of proper mixture and temperature.

Students will have a hands on project and work in groups of 4.

Students (each group) should carefully keep a journal of the mixtures, ie. the amount in % and weight of the mix and amount of water added.

Students will keep in the journal the temperature when the slump test is performed. The results should be compared with each group.

Note: Have everyone make a different mix. Some should have too much water so the concrete "slumps" during the test so students can see it's important to see what NOT TO DO!

  • Students will understand the relationship and effects the proper ratios have when concrete is mixed. Students will learn how water effects the strength of concrete.Students will have a hands on project (SLUMP TEST) to see how the perform mixing the concrete.
  • Students will work in groups, write down data, keep a journal, and use math to obtain information. Students will learn how chemical reactions work in concrete and how the "mix" affects the end result.
