Students make their own measuring device for determining distances to objects using the properties of triangles (triangulation).

This is the second lesson in a series of four math lessons related to the theme of a zombie apocalypse. This lesson guides students through making their own measuring aparatus for using the triangulation technique to measure the (short) distances of objects in the classroom, Students practice using protractors and rulers to accurately measure line segments and angles, as well as modeling with a diagram to solve a distance problem.

For each measuring device you will need the following supplies (one device per pair of students):

- 1 ruler
- 2 small protractors
- 2 thumbtacks
- tape
- straw
- measuring tape (can be shared by groups)

- Lesson and Building Device
- 1 Hour
- Measuring and Worksheet
- 1 Hour

- Mathematics

- To solve real-world problems using the properties of triangles.
- To practice precision in using a compass and protractor to construct lines and triangles.
