Zoning Code and Standards



A 2 hour lesson providing an overview of the general intent of Zoning or Planning Codes and how they will differ from a Building Code Requirement. Also presented will be several Standards covering items such as concrete, wood, and fasteners. We will also discuss how important these regulating standards are to the design integrity of a structure.

  • Students will understand why municipalities establish Zoning Requirements, what some of these requirements are, and what typical Zoning designations are clustered into. Students will learn how the Zoning Codes and the Building Code are both mandatory factors that are dealt with on all construction projects. With previous Building Code lessons only briefly mentioning Standards, the students will now be exposed to standards for concrete, wood, and fasteners. Upon completion, the students will understand who sets these standards, why they are set, and how critical they are to any designer.
