This competency-based core course is designed for all students seeking a career in the health care field. The course will focus on the concepts and principles of the structure, function and systems of the human body in relationship to human growth and development. Students will learn to recognize problem situations in health care settings as relate to direct and indirect patient care and they will demonstrate the use of critical and creative thinking skills and logical reasoning for problem resolution.

Safety issues, ethical considerations, legal constraints and professional codes will be presented and discussed throughout the course. Students will use the knowledge of disease prevention for the maintenance of optimal health.

Integrated throughout the course are career preparation standards, which include basic academic skills, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, workplace safety, technology, and employment literacy.

From CALPADS: Introduction to Health Science and Medical Technology

This Exploratory/Introduction to Health Science and Medical Technology course provides students with the awareness of a variety of career options examining careers that work diagnostic, supportive, and therapeutic services and the requirements to achieve their career goals. Exploratory courses provide the foundational concepts in which students can begin to form future career choices that meet their individual career interest. Students are exposed to the general requirements for various careers in the healthcare field. Exploratory courses provide the basic experiences and activities that will set a foundation for entry into any one of the Health Science and Medical Technology pathways at introductory level courses.

Infection Control and Universal Precautions

This unit examines measures to prevent the spread of diseases, infection control measures, aseptic technique, patient isolation and universal precautions. There are different categories of microorganisms and factors required for growth. Prevention of nosocomial infection is crucial. Infection control involves understanding the chain of infection and methods for breaking the chain. All healthcare workers are required by law to observe standard precautions and must understand the principles of aseptic and sterile technique. They must always obey isolation precautions.

Workplace Safety and Personal Wellness

This unit examines Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, body mechanics, fire safety and other patient safety protocols. It emphasizes safety first, which is the first step in reducing worker injury and disability.

Anatomy and Physiology

This unit provides a basic overview of anatomy and physiological processes. It also covers common disorders, disease, and possible therapeutic interventions. Students will have a generalized sense of all of the body systems and their functions.

Vital Signs

This unit covers elements of patient assessment. Students will learn about the importance of homeostasis. They learn about the four primary vital signs: temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. They will learn about the different types of temperatures and their averages ranges, as well as how to take an oral temperature. They will learn about the different pulse points and how to take a radial and carotid pulse, as well as how to measure respirations and how to take a blood pressure reading. They also learn how take measure weight and height.

First Aid, CPR and Health Assessment

This unit examines emergencies in health care setting and teaches first responder approaches including first aid, cardiopulmonary resusciatation and other basic patient assessment. Students will learn the skills required to perform CPR on adults, children, and infants, as well as learn and be certified in standard first aid. Students will also learn how to perform a basic health assessment, and learn best methods for exchanging information. Finally, students will learn about the anatomy and common disorders of the circulatory system.

Creating a Public Health Plan PBL Project

This project consists of a series of four lesson plans and serves as an introduction to the fundamental functions of the public health system. The relationship between the public health system and individual health will also be evaluated through the lens of public health best practices and procedures.

The Public Health Plan project provides students with an opportunity to work cooperatively to apply concepts in public health to solve real-world problems. Students will select a health disparity and identify the group most effected by it. They will work in small groups to research the health issue and target population. Students will synthesize their findings in various reports and ultimately present their findings to the class for peer review and final assessment.

Healthy Lifestyle STEM Integrated Project

This unit focuses on the various components of a healthy lifestyle which include nutrition and exercise and their benefits to body systems/homeostasis. Moreover, students will research the adverse effects of poor health choices in conjunction with the critical analysis of The Great Gatsby.



The culminating project: Student teams will research, create, produce and present a multimedia Healthy Lifestyle Education Project to local elementary students. This demographic was selected in an effort to address a local community health concern; childhood obesity and childhood diabetes. Additionally, this project affords students the opportunity to explore the field of Public Health while acquiring hands on experience in the creation and delivery of health education topics. Assessment is based on a grading rubric created based on criteria for project.



By the conclusion of this project students will acquire the following skills:

In addition to the Health Science and Medical Technology (CTE/STEM focus) of the Healthy Lifestyle Stem integrated lesson, educators will find academic lessons in English and Anatomy and Physiology that supplement the primary core area of study.

Planning for Disaster STEM Integrated Project

In this Project-Based Unit, Students will explore and identify roles of the health care workers regarding man-made or natural disasters, active threats, and health emergencies in their area. Students will form a School Disaster Plan based on natural disasters or hazards that may threaten their school. Students will gain experience categorizing patients using color tags during a mock emergency or disaster situation.

After learning the basics of triage in a disaster, developing a medical terminology, managing crisis states, such as an outbreak of a contagion, or an active shooter on campus and managing their own state of stress; students will develop a disaster plan that can be presented to their school officials.
